Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) Implements the Fly Safe with ABE Program

In June, Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) implemented the Fly Safe with ABE program to communicate COVID-19 prevention measures for passenger health and safety. The initiative includes safety measures in place at ABE and important guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDOH).

The Fly Safe with ABE program also includes the exciting arrival of ABE’s newest staff member: Abe the Pilot! You can find Abe on hundreds of informational banners and signs while navigating through ABE.  There is even an option for you to text Abe if you have any additional questions or concerns. Creating a familiar face for passengers to recognize the Fly Safe with ABE program was critical for communication.

Abe’s first major assignment is ensuring air travelers and customers have a safe flight through our terminal complex from check-in to boarding. Before taking off for the airport – Abe (like any good pilot) wants you to review your pre-flight checklist of requirements so that all passengers know:

  • The use of masks or face coverings is required in the terminal complex and by all airlines at ABE

  • Social distancing is easy to do just by following signs and floor markings in the terminal

  • Frequently washing and/or sanitizing your hands is important during travel

Passengers are encouraged, if they see Abe the Pilot, to take a moment to read the information he has been instructed to share with passengers, customers, and airport guests. Learn more about Abe by visiting his profile page: https://www.flyabe.com/abe-the-pilot/.

Months of research, preparation, and implementation by dedicated airport staff has resulted in the creation of an enhanced healthy travel environment with: additional signs and markings to help assist with social distancing, more hand sanitizing stations deployed throughout the terminal complex, increased disinfection/cleaning procedures by our custodial staff, installation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at concession areas, kiosks, and ticket counters, public service announcements reminding passengers of critical safety measures, and the use of NanoSeptic® antimicrobial self-cleaning films applied to numerous touch points throughout our facilities.

At ABE, passenger safety has always and will always be our first priority. We have been vigilant and proactive in our approach to maintain a healthy environment for all travelers, stakeholders, and staff. These efforts won’t slow down for ABE as they will remain the center of our radar.
